Class Descriptions

Level 1 Yoga

Level 1 Yoga is for students new to yoga and those wishing to enhance their basic knowledge of yoga principles and postures. The class begins with a centering and is guided through basic yoga postures that invigorate the body with increased strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Special attention is paid to easing into postures and finding proper alignment. Each class ends with a final, deep relaxation. We encourage students new to yoga to find comfort in the Level 1 classes prior to moving to the Open Yoga (All Levels) classes.

Open Yoga - All Levels

Open Yoga classes are our most inclusive offerings and are truly for students of all levels. Students with a basic knowledge of yoga principles and postures will however be more empowered, as the Open Yoga classes build on principles learned in our Level 1 classes. Asana (posture) instruction focused on body alignment will be combined with the practices of yogic breathing, meditation, and relaxation. Modifications and enhancements will be offered for a fun and safe practice, empowering each individual to his or her most inspired and playful Self.

Advanced Yoga

Advanced Yoga builds on the principles learned in our Open Yoga (All Levels) classes and is intended for students who wish to deepen their practice. Students will refine standing poses and strengthen preparations for backbends, inversions, and arm balances. Full versions of these advanced asana, as well as breath work and some guided meditation, will be playfully introduced and skillfully taught using the Anusara Universal Principles of Alignment™. This class is recommended for students with at least one year of previous yoga training. Enjoy growing your practice and celebrating your heart.

Yoga Core

Yoga core focuses on celebrating the belly while developing overall core awareness, flexibility, and strength. The class blends yoga postures with specific abdominal exercises and yogic breathing. This class offers a short (1 hr), slightly faster paced sequence for those who wish to have a more focused practice. All levels are welcome.

Gentle Yoga

Gentle yoga is suitable for any level student who desires a more gently paced class than Level 1 Yoga. It is ideal for seniors, students with special conditions or injuries, and beginners who want a slower introduction to yoga. Each class begins with a centering and includes breathing techniques and sequences designed to build strength, increase flexibility and range of motion, and improve concentration. Poses are often taught with the use of props such as chairs, blocks, blankets, straps, and bolsters to help students ease into postures and find proper alignment. Each class ends with a final, deep relaxation.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is suitable for any level student wishing to release tension, beginners, and students with special conditions or injuries. This class opens with gentle, mindful yoga postures and breathing techniques and moves into receptive restorative postures. Restorative yoga involves the use of props to allow us to release, relax, and gently bring ourselves into alignment with our true nature.

Prenatal Yoga

Prenatal yoga is a gentle, safe, and supportive class in which the classic yoga postures are modified for the changing needs of the expectant mother. Focus is on developing strength, flexibility, proper breathing, and an inner peace as preparation for birth and motherhood. Each class opens with a sharing circle to allow you to freely discuss the exciting new changes you and baby are experiencing as well as the discomforts and concerns that arise. Like all classes at Capitol Hill Yoga Prenatal yoga classes are drop-in based and no prior yoga experience is necessary. To uplift the bond and community held within the class we ask that only expecting mothers attend the class. For more information on our prenatal classes & advice from our teachers click here.

Pilates

Pilates is a dynamic mind-body conditioning class based on the work of the late Joseph H. Pilates. This workout will tone and firm, stretch and strengthen the entire body. It focuses on engaging the core muscles - the Powerhouse - through a series of exercises done in a flowing sequence. Pilates is suitable for all fitness levels.
